But to actually answer the question, there MUST be something to the idea of a serious chess player "type". For one thing, I see something in the chess community also see in the amateur astronomy community... an odd mix of Intellectuals and psuedo-intellectuals or wannabe intellectuals.
One thing I love about chess is that it is purely a democratic meritocracy. How many complete fools have I met who present themselves as masterminds because they inherited enough money to buy the latest, most expensive astronomy toys, having flunked algebra while insisting Jesus rode a dinosaur. You don't see that in chess. The metrics don't lie. Your abilities are measurable and a matter of public record,
In chess, glory is won only by hard work. I rank quite high in both I.Q. and education, but as a chess player, I stink and the only thing that will change that fact is hard work. No matter how smart or educated some-one is, they'll have their ass handed to them by any dedicated kid, and that's a good thing.
