Mate in one...and he doesnt move ?

HotspurJr

The fact that people sometimes resign these won positions is why people do this.

If you're playing online, then you're literally sitting at the greatest time-wasting machine ever invented. Pop open another window and watch a youtube video, or do some tactics exercises.

Hey it’s not about what I like or din’t like.
It’s about people constantly complaining about people wasting their time.

You said "that's a silly rule", so obviously you don't like it for some reason. And I'm telling you "what's wrong with that". You asked a question, I answered it.

Yea.  I have played against people like that.  Most of them are jerks.  I had 10 min left and I had to wait it out before I got my points.

Ginarook

Yes, its real pity you cant have a quick look at their profiles before you start a game sad.png

I got a good move on him and he quits.  I have to wait for 30 seconds to get the points:  https://www.chess.com/live#g=3603891258

He had well over 5 minutes left ?! enough to reconnect at worst ?

Sorry about your poor sporting opponent Ginarook I sadly don't play the quicker time controls ie Blitz or BULLET my shortest controls are 3 day per move! and never experienced such poor sportsmanship but sadly a lot of opponents won't resign even in lost positions, sadly it's always going to be the case under quickly game controls. anytime you fancy a friendly I be happy to play but you may not be so keen as I only play either 3 or 5 day per move, best of luck in your future games!

Scottrf

I’ve been a piece up in one of my games for about two months, but he has 3 months of vacation time left. Ridiculous.

Ginarook

Its probably Prince Andrew you are playing then happy.png

Ginarook

Wow, in view of todays' news , I hope it isn't !

Re the original post, that's so obnoxious.  It's funny how widely sportsmanship and just common manners vary through games.  When I find people who are courteous, I tend to mark down their names as people to play with in the future.  It makes things so much more pleasant.

Ginarook

Well, I have not played him again, and I will not.....ever happy.png

They'll eventually move.  What is likely happening is that they want to show to game to friends/parents (a lot of kids on this forum); kids get excited in those situations.

Ginarook

Oh ? that is just immediately before they get mated.....hmmmmm

mgx9600

Ha, I see.  I thought the other person was winning.

That's pretty common here.  I still rememer posting about this issue when I first joined.

Ginarook

No, he was one move away from being checkmated happy.png

So he made me wait, maybe he was hoping I would forget the game ??

mgx9600

Unfortunately, it happens too frequently in online chess.  Sometimes, they'll make a move at the last minute hoping that you have already abandoned the game and win on time.

What is crazy was this happened to my son in a rated OTB tournament, where my son is 1 move away from delivering checkmate and his opponent stopped moving and just waited until the last seconds on the clock. My son was sad that he had to just sit there (costing him video game time, which he gets to play between chess games).  He was so young and new at tournaments back then that he didn't know that he could have asked for TD to help.
