I mean, surely this is a joke. Look!, says the 17th century colonialist, all of the black people in America are slaves. Why would anyone dare to argue that they aren't innately bound to slavery? Statistics have proven it...

Of course men are better at chess than women...and pretty much everything else...they are after all merely our ribs

I like girls it doesn't matter to me that they don't play as well al that matters is that some are beautiful :D

In principle this is true. However I would like for everyone to entertain the notion that the question is misleading. If anyone has read about the complexities of the brain you will have come across the scientific premise of the Female and Male brain which is not actually a sex related axiom rather a woman can have a male brain and a man a female brain. However it well established that the female brain is more Global and as such has greater understanding in many areas. The Male brain is more one sided arguably less dynamic but more logical and systematic. It's a misnoma that having a superior chess abilty implies greater intelligence, it's more to do with a specific brain function. Read Howard Gardeners multiple intelligence and aptitudes.

I'm not really interested in the general discussion this has become, but to be fair RhinoRainbow, that example has no relation to a refutation. Slavery is arbitrary; playing ability hardly is.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by arbitrary here (or what you mean by "no relation to a refutation"). The 17th century colonialist *knows* that blacks, as a natural kind, are slaves because he sees that everywhere blacks are slaves. Similarly, we apparently *know* that women, as a natural kind, are inferior at chess because everywhere we look they are inferior at chess. The fact that the slavery example is absurd is supposed to show that the chess example is also absurd. But the example you use makes no difference at all, it applies to any case you could possibly come up with.

If you are saying that "slavery as applied to blacks" is arbitrary, but "chess ability applied to women" is not arbitrary, then you are just begging the question, since that claim is exactly what is trying to be shown by the argument.
