This looks like more one advantage of be a premium member over free accounts like mine.
How do you get them to automatically disappear? I've messages from two years ago that I've never archived and I hardly ever archive any messages anyway.

No. There is a timeframe. I believe it's stated somewhere when you go to your messages.
Stfac, you have an option to delete, just like regular email.
NOTE: Items in your sent box are kept for 3 months and are then deleted.
Not seeing any mention visible when I go to my messages. Yes, sent messages will be deleted after three months.
