Pasadena Chess Club

Anybody here from the Pasadena Chess Club? (Pasadena, CA)

WiTeBoi

There is a casual chess club that meets in Pasadena every Thursday, from 7pm-10:30pm at the Starbucks on the corner of Colorado and Bonnie across from PCC. Some of the players from the Pasadena Chess Club and Arcadia Chess Club meet there. It is a good casual chess environment with beginners to expert level players. Sometimes there are National Masters that come in.

LittlePinkCorvette

I've been living up north since 2007, but I used to be a member of the Pasadena Chess Club. Maybe someone should start a Chess.com version of the club. But if I find myself in Pasadena again someday, I'll stop by Starbucks for sure

TalsKnight

I have played there and the arcadia club. As recently as last year.

LittlePinkCorvette

Cool, last time I played there was in 2006. I think I started 2-0, and then lost my last three lol. That's when they were meeting at this church on Los Robles and Del Mar. Is Randy Hough still running the tournaments?

Monie49

Randy Hough was running tournaments in Riverside about 1974.

LittlePinkCorvette

Well, that was before my time, but I know he ran the tournament I played in in 2006.

The PCC now meets at boys n girls club on del Mar. Loudest chess club I've ever been to and the kids are out of control.

AussieRookie

Never been to Pasadena.

But I do know the classic John Paul Young song.

Ooh it's such a long long way to Pasadena

Ooh just to find some air that's kind of cleaner

Boys and girls club, that's near Rosemead BLVD right? Nothing over there but Del Taco. I first started playing there in 1998, when they met at the Pasadena Senior Center. Old Town was just right down the street, plenty of places to eat and drink happy.png

Yeah, expensive places to eat and drink. Haven't played at senior center for 10 years or so. I don't like their new location, so I see the Pasadena crowd at Acadia CC on Mondays.

LittlePinkCorvette

I never played at Arcadia, always meant to, but never got around to it.

I lived up north in '99, lassen county, where it snows, on border with Oregon. So you're back and you wish to play? There's also Santa Monica CC, and downtown metropolitan CC los Angeles.

LittlePinkCorvette

No, I'm still up north

I never saw this posting before. My name is Scott and I'm the Chief TD at the Pasadena Chess Club. I've been there 2 and 1/2 years now. I took the club over and removed everyone from the officers list except for one who does help. I instituted strict policies on the proper way to run USCF events. I'm a Senior TD with the USCF and am considered the strictest TD in California but I'm equitable in all manner of rulings. The entire club is now literally one of the most professionally run clubs in America. I have broken attendance records for years because of the professionalism I expect rom every player unrated to Grandmaster. The playing strength is the best. Annie Wang one of my members with a rating of 2365 just won the gold in Montevideo, Uraguay for the Women's World Championship with a score of 10 1/2 out of 11 games. There are experts, masters, CM's, FM,s IM's that attend regularly. Randy Hough is still there and plays but he is only a player. I have at least 5 TD's of various certification's that play as well. Anyone is welcome to come and play and I'll even give you a free game or two just to test your chess abilities. You must be a USCF member though in good standing. We are located on Del Mar at the Boys and Girls Club between Rosemead and San Gabriel Blvd's just south of the 210 freeway. Good Chess to all.

Hi Scott, nice to meet you. I'm probably coming to Pasadena in either the Spring or Summer to see my sister, I will certainly stop by happy.png

I'll certainly be looking forward to meeting you NotAJediYet.

Happy Holidays,

Hi NotAJediYet, I played in both the chess club Pasadena and Arcadia; both are wonderful clubs and with plenty of strong players. I know a lot players in both clubs.

yureesystem

I use to play on Monday nights at Arcadia and Fridays at Pasadena, great way to increase your rating. happy.png

What makes a tournament director "strict"?
