Rating - amongst us who are below 1500. Is that important?

I have been striving to get better in chess. I think the breakthrough came when I no longer thought so hard about my rating. I play and I read - and my rating goes up and down. My goal is to learn and getting better. Whenever I lose, I go through an analyse of the game - and learn a lot.

This sounds like a good approach! I like daily chess, taking the time for the moves. Doing so I will remember better what I thought during the game, so the analysis is more interesting.

According to the site's STATS, you're in approxmately the 90th percentile of Daily Players.

On balance, you've already "made it," and 90 percent of the Daily players are "weaker" than you.  So enjoy the limelight, and improve at your own pace.

Teach those grandchildren how to play.  They will have fond memories of your chess time together.  happy.png

I have a similar rating in Daily Chess, 1531, 91.6%. I even believe that I can get better soon, as most part of my points I got playing "Daily Chess-blitz", a lot of games at the same time, not using the board to analyse (without engine, of course). Now I am playing one or two games at the same time, spending much more time at each move. This makes me improve and pushes up my rating (slowly, but constantly).

No, I don't think it is important.  In fact, I don't even think it is important if you're above 1500 unless you depend it for some kind of income/profession (then, it is important even if below 1500).

As a hobby, just play it and have fun... and be thankful that chess is such an inexpensive hobby!

My rating is most of the time floating between 1400 and 1550

When I follow my own single rule it's easy to reach 1500, but unfortunately I dont take the time to do so! angry.png

My rule and advise; Before making a new move, play back the last 3 moves to get the situation in your head again!

    Goodluck and have fun!

As I posted in another thread, elo fluctuates like crazy. I was 1463 a few days back dropped to under 1300 and back over 1400. In a few days.

Elo depends on how well you are playing. Some days you just play better chess. Elo is a reflection more of form than ability.

Once you get to a peak elo and then drop below it just shows that you are underperforming, and not the ability as a player.

    'Good' is relative isn't it.

A 1200 rating makes you significantly stronger than the average 'chess player', who is someone who knows the rules and has played a few games with their friends.

A 2000 rating makes you a chess deity compared to this average player. But still a complete fish compared to the big boys.

By this reasoning, it could be argued that anyone who plays competitive chess regularly is a 'strong' player, as long as you're using a broad definition of strong.

On blitz I am usually around 1800-2000, on standard I am 1900, what you must understand is that we are not machines, even if I am a 1900 player there are going to be days that I can play like a 1700 and days that I can play like a 2000, when you improve that think that I am talking about also improves and in that moment you improve your ELO, there is going to be a day that even if you are in a really bad day you cant play bellow certain rating and thats when your rating goes up, on my worst day I can be 1800 on blitz here but I play other day and its normal that I improve 100 points in one day, after a lot of study a day is going to come in which my worst day I will play as a 2000, and in that day I am going to have from 2000 to 2100 or something like that
