Rating Fluctuations

How do some players frequently fluctuate 200 rating points in Rapid? Isn’t this a red flag? Isn’t Chess progression relatively linear? For example, look at my Rapid progression; it’s not up and down and all over the place; it tells a story.

You would need to lose 20 games of Rapid to fluctuate 200 rating points. I don’t see winning/losing streaks continue on for 20 games. Something else must be going on…

You can lose more than 10 rating per game, especially against lower rated players, or if you have a high RD.

@6 I mean, yes, but this is a fairly rare case. I’m talking in common generalities.

It is common to get into tilt mode:
playing while in bad shape, losing, playing more to regain rating and losing even more.

Suppose your opponent was moved from the day shift to the night shift at work.

Maybe you are seeing the difference between someone who is tired, and is playing the chess.com app on his phone on the bus, and the same person well rested and playing on the web-site at home.

Shift-work can add or subtract hundreds of points from your playing strength.

Fair point; thank you. But that really only explains one down or upturn, right? To be fluctuating 200 rating points *frequently* seems iffy.

There is no law that says ratings progress has to be linear. You may get better until you reach the limit of your ability, and then have to regroup and learn more before advancing. In the meantime you may stagnate or regress. Happens to the best and worst of us.

Fair point

To stagnate and regress 200 rating points in Rapid?! That means you lose 10-20 games in a short period, then win that many and do it all over again. HOW??

I think 200 is too much but maybe they are playing under the influence of drugs or alcohol sometimes. People do.

Could be; very true. Sometimes I wonder if cheaters return to old ways after they tilt down, so the cheat detection can’t catch them.
