so pretty much, after 3 and a half years of fighting, we decided to have a debate that is judged by our teacher. do you have any reasons for chess, or rebuttals for rubix cube reasons, please post.

A rubix cube is nothing but pattern recognition. To a large extent, so is chess. So I would argue, the answer is neither will make you smarter. Playing chess will make you better at chess. Solving a rubix cube will make you better at solving a rubix cube.

Rubik’s cube doesn’t make you more smart. As the person said above, its just some pattern recognition.

#2 I wouldn't say that. Both makes you smarter, as they improve your pattern recognition, thinking, strategy (maybe that’s chess only), tactics (maybe that's chess only) emotional intelligence (maybe that's chess only).

I would argue chess since there are more elements to master in chess than rubix cubes. For example: endgames, middlegames, attacking strategy, various tactics, positional play, opening repertoire.

I figured out to solve the cube on my own, didn’t feel smarter for it. I’ve played chess off and on since I was a kid and it is by far a more complex endeavor. I think there are studies showing chess players perform better in school, but I doubt it’s because the game makes them smarter.
