If you want to play in OTB tournaments, then learning in person is ideal. You'll get used to calculating on a 3D board, and if you can join a club there'll be a lot of stronger players to help point you in the right direction. Still, I don't think there's anything wrong with learning online either. It's how I get most of my games in since it's way more convenient.
Should a beginner start online or in real, life? I don't know but it was in my head for so long. I started in person and started to use chess.com last week lol. So yeah, should a person who doesn't know ANYTHING start online or in person?
