I wish I were brave enough like you to go out and play at cafes... I don't know what's stopping me... the thought of sitting there with a chess set by myself waiting for a stranger to come challenge me is so intimidating! Also, the staring... and the waiting until someone actually would show up and play.

I do that. I'll go to Starbucks, set my board up with me as black, set my clock for a 10 min game and wait for a game. Most people I find don't know how to play that well.

That's why I was thinking it'd be more productive of my time to go to a chess park or better yet play in tournaments. But I could also see how a coffee shop or café would be more nice and leisurely. Laughing

Well, the coffee's better, for one.

At our coffeshop we are so casual we don't even play originally.  Me and my buddy have memorized three immortal games and just replay the cycle back and forth playing both black and white (Ok, this time you're Morphy).  The public is astounded, nay stupified, at such unfettered brilliance we earn free coffee!!

This thread's been popping up on my other account's tracked activity list for the last year or so. I've kept it tracked because I love the thread, and I've wanted to comment a couple of times. Can you unblock my other account (condude2)? I was out of line, and I apologize, I won't do anything of the sort again.

Welcome back!

Thank you so much!

Cosmic: You should've seen the looks I got for playing chess without a board or pieces with a friend on the bus. No comments... I think because people thought we were insane.

Note that by without a board or pieces, I mean verbally. We weren't moving invisible pieces around Wink

People do that? Man, if I could visualize well enough to do that I'd probably be a much better player.

Or is it the other way around? When you get better as a player you start visualizing better? Either way, damn.

We weren't very good at it. I ended up with both a rook and bishop on f1 for about 10 moves. In any case, it's good practice, and it's just a good laugh if you end up teleporting somewhere you shouldn't be.

I wonder when the Professor and Magneto play chess together, does Magneto have to put on his helmet so Charles doesn't read his mind?

You know how they have epic rap battles on Youtube... they should act out epic chess battles WITH COMMENTARY between famous people (played by actors)... I think that would be funny :3

Yeah that sounds freakin' awesome. I first heard about "blind chess" through Magnus Carlsen. 60 Minutes did a brief documentary on him. They filmed him and his chess teacher with just a chess clock between them exchanging chess moves. I was amazed and I will always be amazed. However, I heard that it doesn't actually help improve your chess game. Sure it's a great mental excercise but for the time it takes to memorize the board and become good at it... maybe if you're on Carlsen's level it could help, but...

That's funny condude2 ended up with two pieces on the same square Laughing LOL. I'd probably end up with 5 pieces on the same square.
