Solving tactics on a board, well... not a real board exactly

I have only been playing chess (if you can call it that) for a few months and I am terrible at it. No argument. I have been hearing that playing OTM offers some benefits over playing chess on a screen. My problem is that I don't have anyone to play OTB with. I was wondering if I downloaded a chess app where I can play games on a pretty realistic 3D chess board and played games/solved tactics, would I be getting the same benefit. I don't know why playing OTB  is preferred over a screen but . . .  any advice?
