Another piece of bad advice is to only play the soundest openings. If you're below IM/GM level, gambits often work. I once beat an 2300 NM with the Albin in an OTB tournament game, and in addition have played a large number of gambit games in OTB tournaments with a high score.

Me being 1300...i often play Danish and Englund gambits.

Best worst advice: Put your pieces in danger to threaten mate. After all, checkmating is far better than losing a piece.
