On the contrary, I am gaining time. I am here to play chess... Why else? Yes I do like to express my views on chess so I can (hopefully) make people aware of how pointless chess really is, so that they may enjoy this website more maybe, or maybe quit chess entirely, it does not matter to me as long as they are with Christ.

so if someone such as myself was not with christ it would matter to you if I enjoyed chess?

kissinger

there is no "we" in pointless, folks

I am not mistaken. Love for others, especially God, is what is more important than anything. Intellect is only what God has allowed you to understand about this world. Or to think you understand ;)

You say Intellect is what allows us to understand the world, chess builds the intellect and helps us understand the world better. ergo chess is useful and not totally without a point.

The point of life is to understand the point of life, I have already said this. Intellect is what helps you understand the world we live on. But it does not help whatsoever with the understanding of the point of life.

And yes, I am very sorry for you that you have chosen not to be with Christ, if thats what you mean, and yes you should reconsider everything in your entire life, there are plenty better things you could be doing than playing chess.

rich, have you ready anything I have posted? 99% of everyone here has said the exact same thing, chess being a mental test that is. And what do you mean, "Why would you want to play chess??". I play it because it is time passing while I'm waiting for armageddon.

Sheath

and the coming of the great pumpkin.

bigpoison

Of course there is a point to chess.  The point is to checkmate your opponent.

We will all be dead before the armageddon even happens and I belive chess is nowhere near a waist of time. Chess is one of the most mental type of test that the human race has ever thought of! (:^( You should belive that too, but I guess you'll never belive that Pointlessness.

angelor

At least chess is not as pointless as the question; is chess pointless?

makadabr

Dear pointlessness, I'm glad that you feel that there is some meaning to your life, and it seems to be preparation for the afterlife, belief in a god etc.  Your argument based on the presumption that there is a supernatural entity will fail to resonate with many rational people who do not share your delusion.  I do not mean to belittle your faith, as it clearly provides some sense of purpose to your existence.  However, do not attempt to intellectually humiliate people who do not share your nihilistic attitude and unsubstantiated truisms.  By all means, continue your search for the true meaning of life, as this self actualisation is the elusive goal of us all, but don't try to impress us with your deep insightful psychobabble that is ironically shallow.

Now, back to chess...

I'm not saying Chess is pointless I'm just saying that Pointless made a unreasonable discussion and most everyone is against him. And I say again Chess is a very mental test and ,angerlor, I agree with you.

You do not know how close armageddon is. Chess is pointless, if you believe otherwise then fine, perfectly fine, play it, and love it. But when armageddon does come, we will see the true 'point' of what I am speaking of.

Sheath

This is really not appropriate for the posts.  But until this thread gets blocked I'm willing to protest by pointing out that people just as sure of themselves as you are were saying the end is near since that myth was first put forward.

I don't belive in anyway that the armagaddon is near. Still you will belive chess is a time waisting thing. In somewhat I belive chess makes time go faster becuase you having fun, but you should never have started this conversation. Somewhere in this chat it says that you are just sharing your opinion and I agree plenty. Once again chess is a mental test.

if Chess is "pointless"... then why are you writing a blog about it.... doesn't that make you pointless?

Furthermore, chess is practice for thinking and problem solving, the same way sparring is practice for boxing.

Is everything that doesn't solve the world's problems directly considered pointless ? because (hate to break it to you), very few things do!

 Agreed.

Chess is God...God is Chess.... He is everything and nothing at the same time.... there is no end and there is no beginning.... so cut the armageddon nonsense out....

Sort of agreed. The only thing I don't agree on that chess is god but thats your opinion.

Pointless? Really?

How about:

1.  Playing with family members, which is a great bonding time with them?

2.  Playing with friends in your home, at a cafe?

3.  Playing in a tournament where the proceeds are given to charity?

4.  Playing with youngsters who are incapable of physical sports?

5.  Playing online with family and friends who are located in other countries?

There are so many ways to make chess contribute to society by creating the above precious bonding moments, and charitable acts.

It just takes a little imagination of how to make it work.

You brang tears to my eyes MainStreet. I knew it helped bond but never knew that they did charity with chess.
