Opening Principles:
1. Control the center squares – d4-e4-d5-e5
2. Develop your minor pieces toward the center – piece activity is the key
3. Castle
4. Connect your rooks
Tactics...tactics...tactics...

Pre Move Checklist:
1. Make sure all your pieces are safe.
2. Look for forcing move: Checks, captures, threats. You want to look at ALL forcing moves (even the bad ones) this will force you look at, and see the entire board.
3. If there are no forcing moves, you then want to remove any of your opponent’s pieces from your side of the board.
4. If your opponent doesn’t have any of his pieces on your side of the board, then you want to improve the position of your least active piece.
5. After each move by your opponent, ask yourself: "What is my opponent trying to do?"

As long as people keep asking the same question over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...

I will keep copying and pasting over, and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...

There is a lot of useful information people post here.  It would be nice if there was a central place to put it all, where anyone could go, search, and find it.  Ah...nevermind...I know thats not gonna happen.  You have people that have been here for years, and still ask: "How do i report someone?"

I kind of wish they would modify the forums to behave like Stack Exchange for just this reason.

Agreed...

IMBacon, thanks for that info. It is very helpful for someone at my level. I consistently overlook some of those Pre Move instructions, which gets me in trouble. This checklist will be very helpful! Thanks again!

14... Rxf6 allowed 15 Bg5 (you should've recaptured with the queen).  But in the game you had 16... Rg6 (since the bishop is now pinned to the opposing queen).

The opening was kind of flawed, and you had skewers (especially the one with queen+rook). Remember to look for what your opponent could play that could seriously mess up your game.

Also remember to use lessons and tactics to help your game.

If you moved the b4 bishop backwards on move nine then you wouldn't have lost the e5 pawn. Also, on move fourteen you could have just recaptured with the queen and white wouldn't have been able to get the rook. Everything these guys are saying is true but at your level I'd really just focus on tactics. In my opinion the positional theory stuff won't really help a lot until your tactics are very good. Good luck :)
