Nakamura has won several games with 2.Qh5

Really?

I remember him losing to a 2600 and drawing a 2500, both games when he was the higher rated player.

I don't remember him winning any... I mean, maybe on ICC or something.

So I am told.

Never saw the games myself.

I mentioned the reason in an earlier post; these GMs are so strong that they can really play about any opening and still win. Of course, this does not mean it is a good opening - maybe it just shows how talented these players are to play an "odd" opening and still win. I believe Hikaru has sometimes used 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5; I heard that Magnus has occasionally used 1.a4 and the list goes on.

These openings are not refuted and it may get the well-prepared opponent "out of book." Additionally, these openings are sometimes seen as "bad" since they neglected some opening principle (like development or control of the center), but some of these "odd" lines may even transpose to a "solid" line.

It's not that bad of an opening. The thing is that most of the players who play this opening are really bad and are just looking for cheap tricks.

The_Hellish_Pandemic

Even 1.a3 is an idea. Playing Black with extra tempo

IM_Serious

Carlsen won with 1. a4 against Radjabov. There are no bad openings. Just bad players looking for some cheepos.

There's nothing wrong w/ lowering yourself 2try2 ++ at f7. I mean IT IS the smooshiest square on the board.

Disgusting!

I think I'll give Qh5 a go in bullet and blitz.

watch it on 1.25 speed and save 30 minutes or so

Every time I see 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5, I can bet the game will follow up with 2...Nc6 3.Bc4 g6 4.Qf3 Nf6 5.g4. (from my OTB experience)

It's an Opening Trap. But if you like chess enough that you play it online, then you probably won't fall for it.

superchessmachine

I used that trap a while back. Thanks.

Thee_Ghostess_Lola

....good thots.

I mean even 2000's have been caught playing it sometimes. My coach who was a 2000 had a coach which made him play Qh5 and his coach was a 2300.
