For me, I'm always using open sicilian or nimzo indian defense depend on if the opponent start e4 or d4.

I honestly played whatever I wanted. I had basically no theory.

I just improved my middlegame and crossed 1500.

Once you get to 1700, it is then required to learn openings.

Stop playing stupidities like 1.a4 2.a5 or 1.e4 2.Ke2 would be probably very good idea.

I believe I played e6+d5 against everything, at around that range, then improvised from there.

But really, any reasonable opening should be fine. As long as you feel comfortable with it, and you keep striving to understand how to wield your pieces better.

Crossing any rating range means improving your overall play - not just searching for a magical opening or defense.

It's not the opening. You can play every opening at 400 or +2000 level.

Duras Gambit. Very few play it well as white. e4 f5 exf5 Kf2. Eval is like +3 but it has a 50/50 win percentage.
