Short answer yes but don't worry about it focus on getting better 400-1000 is less of a bg leap then you think it's mostly positional ideas and tactical ideas (underrated ps: don't focus on those puzzles they are helpful for pattern recognition but not necessarily with comming up with new ideas or seeing your opponents moves )

I learned my first opening (1 with white and 1 with black) around 2000...
Id play kings pawn though

BigChessplayer665

I honestly play a bit of everything

Asnitte

I used french defense. I don't think it is best choice for black, but it is playable and I'm still using it.

I crossed 1500 chess.com rating by playing 1. e4 e5 with black and 1. d4 d5 with black. In fact, that is also what originally got me to cross 2000 chess.com rating too.

Sicilian but it's tough to learn

Nice, but I don't believe the Sicilian needs to be as tough to learn as most people think. It does a ton of mainline theory in many lines, but so does e4 e5 and d4 d5. In fact, here is a video I made recently which simplifies the Sicilian Defense for beginners and intermediate level players:

I agree the Sicilian Defense is a Great Intermediate Opening for players.

——————————

On the other hand, The video you showed is a poor example of trying to make the Sicilian Beginner Friendly.

Your video has been made towards a more Intermediate level Audience.

Your claim of the video being more Beginner Friendly is factually not true.

———————————

You are playing moves in your video Beginner players will not see and/or play.

You are playing Chess Theory in your video.

Most Beginners don’t play Chess Theory because they don’t know about Chess Theory!

——————————

The below screenshot shot is a very common set up Beginners will reach!

The Bowlder Attack is 1 of the most devastating Meta Lines for Beginners against the Sicilian.

Look at the common moves Beginners between ratings of 1000 to 1200 will play!

- Nf3

- Qf3

- Qh5

- d3

Your video is literally showing a mainline Nadjorf starting position and “Beginner” are doing random Scholar Mate Attacks.

Completely Useless!

———————————

The video was great video, but it was definitely directed to a more knowledgeable level of chess player. It really isn’t geared towards beginner Chess Players.

Im 2100 and dont know openings. but i play e4 consistently but don't know theory.

I would only play caro kann until 1700. I switched to the accelerated dragon and went from 1700 to 1870. For white i just played italian against e5 and had no theory against anything else.

Definetly possible, I don't know how to explain it since I never stagnated there, but I just watched gothamchess and got from 400 to 800, from there I did a few puzzles and reached 1200. This was about 2 months of watching gothamchess and then 4 doing puzzles. I never studies chess intensely and just watched videos and did puzzles in my free time.
