To get a Coach or Not

  • #1

I last played chess some 10-15 years ago as a youngster I was average-good probably 1200-1400 rating.  I know where I am weak and need to develop and i am aiming to get 1800 rating at least.  Do i get a coach or not?

    Hello and welcome to chess.com!

You are likely a stronger player than myself, so I can't advise on if you need a coach or not. However, if you decide that you do then you can find many great coaches here:

Depends. If you find a motivating coach, it can only help you.

However, the most important part is playing OTB (if you aim at 1800 OTB rating) or just online if you aim at 1800 online.

I have had a great experience with my coach.  If you find the right guy, with only a little money you can get some great advice and a helpful weekly review of your game.

... that said, a coach doesn't magically make you any stronger.  to improve you must study.  so its really a decision only you can make.

Your age is critical - the younger you are, the more chess upside you have, past a certain age (I'm 62) you can still improve your rating some, but you will feel yourself start to get dumber.  The specific turning point is different for different people.  Eat healthy, get sufficient exercise and sleep and go easy on the liquor and drugs.

My goal would be to reach a 2000 level. Obviously that depends on my current level. I would be interested in finding a coach that does a combination of one to one and group classes. This way a teacher can present games and ideas, like we see on Youtube instructional videos, and students can ask questions either at the end, during, or after through a forum like this. Perhaps the forum would have to be private, so you could simply create a NM Erabin group and invite "paying" students.
