Where do sub-300s learn Scholar's Mate

Since they don't know openings, they play games and then they lose to scholars mate. They realize how good of a strategy it is and start playing it. They win some games and feel happy, those who start learning real chess skills quickly move up the ranks and ditch scholars mate forever. Those who don't start learning stay with the scholars mate forever, happily mating 200's with it

Most chess books, when teaching the basics of the game, mention the fools mate and the scholar's mate as the two fastest checkmates. I can understand that beginner players, realizing that nobody in their right mind would willingly play the fool's mate, adopt the scholar's mate instead, thinking that people will fall for it.
Where??? Who??? Who is teaching them Scholar's Mate? Is it like a disease where when you get beaten by Scholar's Mate enough times you become a Scholar's Mate player?
