Aren't they tought how to avoid em?  Also, I meant SCHOLASTIC chess.

Apparently not.

doublewhammy

school bullies do not allow the French defense to be played.

I find it dumb that people make fun of scholastic tournaments. True, most kids are bad at chess, but so are most adults. And the kids improve, while adults largely don't.

Conflagration_Planet

I ask this because, a while back I read that some idiot was trying to make scholars mate illegal in scholastic tournies. If you scholars mate somebody, you forfeit the game. I disagree with this stupid idea.

Was it posted on April 1 ?

Yeah, that's a pretty stupid idea. I agree with your disagreement with it.

Do you actually agree with it?! Why not teach em how to avoid it, instead of just rewarding ignorance?

In the three years I played for my high school team, I did not see one fool's mate.

I did see a bunch of horrible endgames, though.

Conflagration_Planet

Fool's mate isn't scholars mate.

DrSpudnik

Are we going to quibble now over which idiot's mate is which?

Ziryab

Teaching kids how to avoid scholar's mate is also teaching those who are paying attention how to deliver it.

It can't be delivered, if you know how to avoid it.

So many people get the two confused and think they mean the same thing.

Shows the quality of Chess Education when kids try to 1. play to win with a cheap trap and 2. Being victimized by falling for it.
