Why can't the king put the enemy king in check if it's protected?

This position is invalid. Kings, aswell as other pieces, can't capture kings (or royal pieces, if this forum was about variants of chess). Plus, king's cannot move into check. The solution is that the way a king checks a king is banned due to practical chess study reasons.

Still not sure. I will wait until somebody replies in 2027

Imagine that chess was about taking the king (so, there is 1 move after checkmate, taking the king). If you put your king right next to the other king, eventhough it's protected, your king will get taken first.
