why do people play 1.d4 e5
Sort:

I have seen people play with black
1.d4 e5
but I always respond 1.d4 e5 2.dxe5 Nc6 3.Nf3 Qe7 4.Nc3 Nxe5 5.Bf4 and I get a good game with white
I guess it seems like a bad move
I think I saw another person play
1.d4 e5 2.dxe5 Bc5 3.Nf3 d6 4.exd6 Ne7 which is a silly trap because dxe7 Bxf2+
All these tricks, mix, gimmicks don't seem to work for Black

Yes, the Englund (1. d4 e5) is based on cheap tricks.
When they don't work out, Black gets a bad game.

Oh I didn't know all the players are related to each other. Hmm I guess that is possible
This is why there are laws against excessive inbreeding. The descendants end up playing the Englund.
Sometimes I’ve ended up doing that in bullet just because I premoved expecting e4 and you just get forced to play the englund

Because it is rare and can take white by surprise. It is also sharp, so when white misplays black can get a good attack. As you note, it is a bad opening and an prepared white player will get a far-superior game.
