why do people who don't know to play chess usually put a high rating at the beginning

Depends.

I started at 400 and after 32 games, I am still clearly not at the correct rating. You are like 1400 rating which is good.MariasWhiteKnight

New to chess should be 100, beginner should be 400, intermediate should be 800 and expert should be 1200. That would allow much more realistic choices for players. How on earth a player that is new to chess could be a 400 rated player?

They're just numbers, people. It doesn't matter if a beginner is zero, 400, or 4 million.

We all understand what the numbers mean and can operate around the system.

#29 still, it would get new players a better place to start. Some players rage quit because they are new to chess, select new to chess and then they lose 5-10 games in a row because the truth is that they are very bad.

I once discussed this with a friend. He said why wouldn't you take the most points offered? I'm not saying I agree with that way of thinking, I'm just pointing out that for him & some others this makes more sense. I feel all users should start from the same rating #, yet I don't know what the # should be that would suffice.
