I think that chess is something people find hard to start on their own; if their parents aren't interested or their friends aren't it's unlikely they will get into it.
As for the perception of chess I personally feel as though most people respect it but as with most populations there is the few rotten eggs that tend to hate on it but I tend to imagine these people are probably rotten about most things.
I wish all schools mandated chess and kids were taught to respect it and play from an early age; end all this ADD crap.
I really hope this never happens. If you think people hate chess now just imagine how much worse it would be if they were forced to play it in school.
I disagree with the idea you're implying. The situation wouldn't be that more people would hate chess; rather, the opinon on chess would polarize: it would be hated more by some people, and loved even more by more people. ON the other hand, a lot more chess players would be produced on the process.
i feel as though mandating it on school curriculum as critical thinking excercises would boost education and introduce the game into a country whose culture relies on the fact that we have no culture, just business.
we are kind of an amalgam of countries....thats all...mostly the descendants of traders from britain and assorted other countries
Would introducing chess in school really develop critical thinking skills? I think chess mostly requires those skills to begin with, not the other way around.

If more non players came here and read the trollish and hateful comments posted every day by some of the members of Chess.com forum, I think they would be put off from chess forever.
Chess isn't life. Life is far more vast than we can imagine. Chess is just an iota of it. It should not be overindulged into & should be kept at its own place. Its a waste of brain energy.
a good thread supposes battles 1/3, trolling 1/3 and serious stuff 1/3. The art of the OP is to aequilibrize the whole.

Society does not hate chess. I challenge you to visit any civilized place in the world and start a conversation with these questions: " Do you play chess? Do you know where I might find a game? What do you think of chess?" I guarantee that the worst you'll get is: "I don't know", or "I don't play" Most of the world views chess as an intellectual activity and a sign of intelligence. All of the movies about chess except Searching For Bobby Fischer precent it as some mystical activity for idiot savants. The world doesn't hate chess. The world is just, sadly, kind of stupid!

Another reason being chess makes a person crazy like Fischer, Morphy, Pillsbury.....non chess players know that.
