Why is chess divided among men and women?

jessicatheprodigee

I don't understand, it isn't like Chess is an activity that requires things like physical strength or speed (something women would be disadvantaged in).  Men and women are similar in intelligence.  So it isn't like basketball where you need an NBA and a WNBA, so why is there Women's Champs and Men's champs?

We can debate forever the reason why, but historically (with rare exception) women just haven't been as good at chess as men.  Women can compete with men if they choose to do so but most don't simply because they wouldn't do well.  Hopefully that will change.

It's a concession to sociological rather than biological differences.

Take, for example, that Mr. Ed won the Horse world championship by default. No other horses play, and he wasn't even IM strength.

It isn't divided in between men and women, there are tournaments for both sexes and women's tournaments.

Women tournaments exist because women are a minority of chess players (because of society seeing chess as a men's game) so these tournaments try to counter this problem. The aim being to help women be pros and help there be more female role models to increase the influx into chess.

That's why there are separate women's cathergories.

Actually since 2009 of the 12 winners (the title was shared twice) 6 were boys and 6 were girls, I am talking about the American spelling bee

Yeah okay smartypants well what about before 2009?

Dunno, can't be bothered to check, also if you go far enough back different levels of education can come into account. With equal chance men and women are equal in spelling bees. Your guess was wrong and sexist.

Men vs women
darkunorthodox88

judith polgar being the ONLY female to be world class ever is a bit concerning for the "its nurture only" theory.

men are more competitive than men, therefore more men play chess than women. that simple.

BoyStan

Today chess should be divided men against women and all the other gender categories LGBTQI !
