Why is chess divided among men and women?

Gerberk8

Fide is run by a lot  of men and only 5 women if we may believe this picture...the women are sitting down and in the front...That just about says it all...the women are decorative...

How many women do you see in a poker room? Not many other than dealers. You're about as likely to see a woman watching her bf play than actually playing. Most women don't go in for intense competition like chess or poker. When limit poker, a far less intense game, was more popular than no limit you saw more women playing. Competition, whether mental or physical, is primarily something men go for. I do believe there are biological differences, but as long as there are so many more men playing than women, nothing can be proven.

It is true that participation of female players is way too less as compared to male players in poker. But despite its being a male-dominated game, many courageous women successfully managed to break the gender and cultural barrier and showcased world-class performances on national and international poker platforms. Nowadays we are witnessing a significant growth in the presence of female players in online and offline poker tournaments and cash games. Many renowned female poker players are earning fame and big money by participating in online cash games and tournaments. Not only online games, women players are conquering offline tournaments too with their extraordinary skills and determination.

Obviously, most women are too intelligent to waste their lives on a stupid board game which lures so many males unto obsession and delusions of grandeur. Most ladies have more common sense.

I don't know about UK women, but American women spend that time on watching reality programming. Not sure that's better.

Are there women playing poker well enough that they could be considered one of the best in the world? That doesn’t exist in chess right now for some reason since no woman is even 2700.

It s Just a question of time...Its going to happen anyway that men and women are no longer divided in chess...It can take a few years though

I surmise the division  is for females benefits  considering that they evince a history of unsatisfactory  performance gap in chess compared to males. Had there been no such division, most of the females would have fallen  behind the ranking leading to  demotivation and frustration. Perhaps, the system might change to emergence soon regarding the fact that modern aged women are catching up rapidly.

because men are slightly better at chess in general. That's OK though.

I think it would be more interesting if men and women competed in championship together

That is true to some degree, but sports like cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, etc. are filled with girls and women competitors. Women are competitive in some areas.

GMproposedsolutions

There shoud be no divison based on gender. Suppose a weak male GM suddenly wants to identify himself as a woman? Who's going to tell him he can't sign up as a woman?

The trophy makers are loving it. Double the revenue.

Men and women have similar averages...   but men have more "standard deviation"... that means more score at bottom and top of math tests, playing chess, etc.

davidsheep

Just like more men at top of chess world, 3x as many homeless men, 3x as many men commit suicide, etc
