White clearly doesn't know how to play 2.Nc3 if he ends up in this position. I'm not going to make the case that white's playing for an advantage, but it certainly isn't nonsense.

I agree with this. If I were playing white I'd take the natural course of 2. ed but there are those who like reversed counterattacking positions and 5c3 looks correct. In these positions, it's best not to allow the opponent to consolidate. You play moves like c3 and f4.
