Will we ever be able to have online tournaments to gain title over the internet?

Will AI allow for this in the future, due to increased ability to spot (interesting play?) I hope, so because many of us can't play due to physical inability to get to tournaments, and economic reasons as well... Thoughts?

Probably not

Thats sad indeed.

I am not sure how AI changes anything about online tournaments. Online tournaments already exist, but I don't see it being allowed to influence regular rating in the near future, and frankly, it shouldn't.

The A. I. could be used to prevent cheating, and thus allow tournaments for real ranking in fide or the like. I think ai will become a strong enough tool in the next ten yrs to allow for this, the current anti cheat isn't strong enough to allow online championships to occur imo.

In our internet driven society, that spends its free hrs usually online. Why wouldn't we want more people the opportunity to become nm, gms, and the like if it could be done to make sure cheating didn't happen? Heck even in one on one its still a issue in todays world. Note I'm not trying or wanting to discuss the topic of cheating here , just highlighting future benefits of a.i in the realm of chess, which will and should be talked about for the future benefit of online chess as a medium imo.

Brain implants might make it feasible but we'll have bigger issues to worry about than Chess ratings.

It is likely never going to happen. Even players of around 2200 strength need only a few moves to tip the scales in their favour and win a game and they don`t have to use assistance constantly. One possibility is to have observes present at home/site of playing but given they will be most likely from the same country as the player there is the question of bias/extra cost etc. All in all - unlikely.

Why would anyone wish to (win) this way??? I would rather lose forever...

This blind faith in AI is astonishing. AI right now is good at only one thing: gather existing data. Current AI is so extremely far away from making a reasonable judgement call that it may never be a real possibility.

Current ai is already smarter then 97% of the population.

Hard to say about the distant future, anything is possible, but it’s a long way from being feasible due to the problems of ensuring a level playing field.. I would be very surprised to see any tournaments like that in the next 10-15 years. Beyond that, who knows

Its something thanks for your reply.

No it isn't. Just because it is good for some particular limited jobs, that doesn't mean that it has intelligence at all. Let alone human level.

What is the connection between the topic and AI?

About the topic: I never tended to learn chess seriously and never wanted to get any title so I understand that my opinion might be irrelevant; anyway chess titles should be gotten in old-school offline tournaments only

About the AI: fortunately we dont have the real AI yet, just neural networks which should not be used to judge tournaments. Leave human chess to people

Fide online arena is already providing a step wise solution to this issue.

So in your view if I have a physical disability then to bad chess aint for you. If I'm economicaly challenged it aint for me? We live in a technologies boom the likes of the industrial revolution and chess should always and forever just be otb? I do have a physical disability that prevents any possibility of going to otb. I'm not trying to be rude and agree with your point to some degree. I see no reason why in the future we can't through technology have a online championship of sorts, perhaps even separated from the current otb title.

Sololevelingsirjohn

I'm ok with the current situation as I lack the ability to become champion tier.
