insult to injury

Lately the live chess site has been wonky. When I issue a challenge it will sometimes apparently search for an opponent forever, without ever bringing up a chess game. If I refresh the page, it says that I lost the game (that I never saw) by abandoning it. Sometimes the interface will just freeze. Sometimes it will apparently "disconnect" even though the little connection bars show a good connection. This has happened to me on multiple computers on multiple networks. To add insult to injury, it now says that I have violated the pair play policy by "abandoning" too many games (because the website either never showed me the game, or the interface froze or whatever) so now I lose points for "losing" a game when it isn't even my fault. If this is not fixed, I will stop playing on this website. Seriously Houston, you have a problem.

What browsers are you using?

Do you have any specific game links where it happened? I'd love to check the logs to see what our servers were detecting.

Hi,

Right now I am using chrome on windows. But it also happens when I use my android. If you look in my game history, you should see a number of "losses" when I haven't even moved. Those are games that I never saw. This happened this morning, so you should see some there. Also, I noticed that if I refresh the page _immediately_ after issuing a challenge, instead of flashing the pictures of players forever, indicating that it is "searching", it will actually show me a game. However, sometimes it will "flash" suddenly back to the old game, and then to the new game again. Very weird. However, thanks for your help.

Hi Again,

It just happened now. https://www.chess.com/live#g=2646671241  I "lost" a game, but the 10 minute timer had only counted down to 9:58! Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

Some more information. I clicked on the link to the game whose link I just posted. It doesn't go back to that game. So, I went to my archive to see if I could find the game there. I couldn't! I don't know if that is normal, but there are games missing, and this is evident by the changes in my ratings. for example, according to the archive, after this game https://www.chess.com/live#a=227421 with tennissus, my rating was 1124, but the next game that shows is with Baghesh https://www.chess.com/live#a=227486 and after that my rating shows as 1105 -- as if I lost 19 points in one game which I _won_!!! Clearly, there are games that are not showing up in my archive, though that may be normal.

jdcannon

Its normal for a game with no moves to not show up in your archive.

I checked your account history and it looks like you are disconnected quite a bit from the site; are you using wifi to connect?

I'd recommend trying to restart your router etc.

I use wifi at home, but the game that I mentioned this morning is at the public library. Yes, it seems I get disconnected a bit. However, it doesn't seem to happen on other websites, although reconnection is perhaps more transparent on those sites. For example, YouTube plays videos all the way through. Also, it seems that the disconnection problem is sporadic. By that, I mean that this morning I had troubles for a few games right in a row, and had to refresh the page, but once I got on a "good" server, the problems seem to disappear. Could one of the servers be overloaded and dropping connections, but the other servers working fine?

Hi ilovesmetuna,

Yes, other sites seem to be very fast, and no problems.

Iresignalot: Welcome to chess.com. I have the same problem. Other sites work fine but Chess.com seems to be where all the players are. Why is that?

jdcannon

Comparing to Youtube isn't such a perfect example.  WIth youtube, the video is fixed and can download ahead of what is needed so you don't notice little drops in connection. That doesn't work on websites like chess.com because we don't know what moves your opponents are making in the future.

Who said anything about youtube? I'm saying these interface problems don't seem to occur with elsewhere. This problem is what prevents me from going full premium.

chessarx

It happens to me too, but I also see it happening to my opponents, wherever I play --  through wifi, with a network cable, no rhyme, reason or pattern.  Then I see that I "abandoned" the game. It sucks but it is what it is.

@ratio56 - jdcannon was referring to the OP's post (#8).

ratio56

Thank for clarifying re post #8, chessarx.

ratio56

I don't get the impression chess.com takes this problem seriously.

ratio56

The reason I'm here though is because it's easy to get a game. I'm finding traffic a bit slow on the other chess sites. Anybody with a good site recommendation?

ratio56

heh heh thanks for the warning Postafi happy.png

I just remembered, there are no other chess sites. Repeat..."no other chess sites" anywhere...
