when I play from the windows phone app I never get the 10 seconds bonus in the 15|10 games. is it possible there is a bug in the app?

  • #2

Very possibly. We don't fully support Windows Phone anymore. Unfortunately the market decided that windows phone wasn't going to be a player :/

ok thanks. it seemed to me in fact that my opponents time keeps growing and mine keeps shrinking

My Windows Phone app v.0.5.4.0 has worked well until last week. I now get "Error. An unknown error has occurred.  Would you like to report problem?"  I'm reporting the problem!  The part of the app not working is the Games List.  It seems most everything else still works.  I realize Chess.com isn't 'fully supporting' Windows Phone, but I'd be exceptionally grateful if you could fix this new bug.

Addendum to my post above (#4):  Of course, I can not play matches, view competitors, etc. Thanks!

I have the same issue as SammyBaugh.

It would be a real shame to have to stop using the website because the mobile aspect is not functional.

Please can you do something to help?

If you read post 2, the Windows mobile app is not fully supported. If it is based on the old Chess Classic version of the app, there is a very good chance that it won't work, since the old version of the site it relied on is being retired.

If it is the newer Play and Learn app, then is is probably that new updates to the back-end have broken functionality.

Hmm, just looked at the Microsoft app store and it only has Play and Learn. Can't tell from the versions list when the last one came out but based on erik's comment above, it probably hasn't been in a while.

I'm currently playing chess tactics and I was stumped by one of the puzzles. When I asked for a hint, I was shown moving a blocked pawn to an unoccupied diagonal square, which is impossible. What's going on? Naturally it affects my rating, which is nothing to write home about. I suppose that's why it's doubly frustrating. You cannot move a pawn to an unoccupied diagonal square and there's no recourse in the tactics site to notify someone of the error.

    It was probably en passant:

so all users with windows phone are out of the application. from now, I will completed all my games from the computer and leave.

I'm really sorry about that. Unfortunately that is what is happening with Windows Phone. See https://www.recode.net/2017/7/17/15984222/microsoft-windows-phone-mobile-operating-system-android-iphone-ios

We WP users are aware that we are a rather small part of the smartphone world.  But while there are still millions of us, it seems prudent for Chess.com to continue supporting WP v. 0.5.4.0 so that we can at least play matches.  Can the coding be that expensive to do?  As Chess.com desires to expand internationally, note that most of your WP users may be abroad.  Thanks! Sammy.

Can't answer for the site, of course, but there are dedicated teams working on the Android and iOS versions. It would likely require an additional programmer, at least, to keep up with the app. So you are probably looking at 50-60,000 a year, unless they could find someone that was qualified that would do it for less or part-time.

The site also likely has stats on how many app users were on Windows phones on the app and those numbers along with the install base, likely doesn't make it cost effective. If the 0.1% number is reflected in the members on the site, that would make less than 20,000 members on the devices and probably 80%+ of those are basic members.

i lost my 12 games  due to android app crash.

i even  mailed chess.com reinstall the app but it was of no use.

    please help

Chess.com will prolly no longer work on it, but don't give up on Windows Phone!  You can still play it thru your phone's browser.  The website sizes pretty well on mobile screens.

True, bio-matrix, and thanks for pointing this out.  But the generic mobile presentation operates much slower, which is why I've aired this issue.  Thanks everyone for dialoguing about this.

We ARE working to restore the Windows Phone to working. Hopefully within 24 hours. That said, we cannot guarantee support when even Windows has given up :/

Thanks, Erik, for the update.  I like (obviously) the WP/Windows Mobile system, and as an end-user have followed its rise & fall.  Perhaps Microsoft will capture the enterprise market that they've hinted at, and make the platform competitive and economically viable.  (No joy as of Wed/20Sep, 17:15 Eastern. Standing by .....)

WP looks like it will be a dark-horse player for the near future.  Fortunately with Blackberry biting the dust, it's in a solid third place.  I'm hoping the iPhone X will have newsworthy glitches or that another Android device will catch fire or have major security issues.  Microsoft has to be in a strong position to capitalize on their mistakes and gain market share.  I'm rooting for Microsoft like you root for the Redskins.  Apple is the Dallas Cowboys.  Android is the NY Giants.  To me Microsoft is the Philadelphia Eagles, as I'm from that part of the country.

I'm also checking the Windows Store like every five minutes for the chess.com update  :-)
