Playing someone who refuses to make a move

Sort:
gracej07

I'm playing a person who is down a few pieces and refusing to make their next move. They've literally said in the chat window that I can either take a draw or wait for them to run out of time - with 24 minutes remaining. Wondering if this is allowed, and if not how do I report them?

AussieMatey

While waiting for them to lose you could sneak down to the shop and buy some fush and chups.

Well, how did it turn out?

Nathanhof

I've had that.

Sometimes they'll do a move hoping you've left and that your time will run out. To stop that make sure you have sounds enabled and the volume up. Go have a sandwich.

For most of us, waiting 24 minutes does not cause a Life of Constant Sorrow.  Learn Patience!

Nyameba

When this happens I just wait by watching the top live game.

Grab a book and wait.  Chess is a game of patience.

It caused a mild annoyance, this is a very dramatic response.

Its a perfectly acceptable response.  Chess is a game of patience.  If you dont have the patience to wait 24 minutes, chess may not be for you.

I did wait, the point is I shouldn't have had to. There's a difference between being patient while playing and just having my time wasted because my opponent is throwing a tantrum. The reasonable thing to do would have been to resign or continue playing.

if its that much of an inconvience, you can always resign the game, and go on to something more important.  If "waiting" 24 minutes is that much of an inconvience resign...unless those precious online rating points are more important?

It's annoying, but if you're innovative, you can find lots of things to do while the clock runs down:  get a cup of coffee, grab a beer, check the stock market quotations, etc.  You have to be a little careful.  Most of my opponents who have pulled this stunt will make a move after 15 to 20 minutes hoping that I'm not paying attention.

Well, no. You can do that if you are in the same situation. I chose not to. The thread asks whether it's allowed, not for your opinion on how I should react - why would you think that's of interest to me? If you can't understand why it's irritating, unsporting behaviour, chess may not be for you.

When the game is over, look through the chat box, there may be a note "so-and-so may have violated..."  Nothing more required.  If that's not there and it really bothers you report them via help/abuse.

That message did come up so hopefully they get a warning or something. Thanks for your response!

Because i understand online chess, and what to expect, i can say for a fact that chess is for me.  I understand its a game of patience, I understand that online, some will do what you described.  That is why i dont play anything longer than 2/1.

Simply type in the chat, "Oh good! I've got laundry to finish. Thanks!"

My favorite solution responses:

"sneak down to the shop and buy some fush and chups." Aussie fish & chips, no doubt.

"Go have a sandwich."

"I just wait by watching the top live game."

You're wasting my time. I'm obviously not interested in your opinion on the matter. Why do you think how I feel about this person's behaviour is any of your business? Is it some kind of control issue?

You obviously do, because you keep responding.  But this has run its course.
