I agree. Especially the categories wherein it is easy to demonstrate, like "Best Article" should have a link to the articles being voted on. The person currently in the lead for this hasn't contributed anything to the site. Game of the month, also a link to the games in question.
The 1 year trophy you mention though has nothing to do with the voting system (I got one too)... it's likely now automated so when you've been a member on chess.com for a year it automatically sends. It's just that when they introduced it people like you and I were out of synch, having already passed our 1 year date.
I just received a trophy for being an "active contributor" for 1 year. The fact is I've been an active contributor for 18 months, so the trophy, ironically, did me a disservice. Last month I received a trophy for Most Active Contributor for September or some such thing. After perusing the trophy voting page - - it was obvious to me, as it would be obvious to anyone, that the voting is somehow manipulated. Not wanting anyone to think that I manipulated any voting, I returned (actually deleted) the trophy.
The entire trophy situation should either be closely monitored or completely eliminated (in my opinion).
