why is this a draw?

nicolaspiedrahita
I know the last move wasn’t the game winning one. What does that automatically consider it a draw?
IMBacon

The black king has no legal moves, so its a draw.

nicolaspiedrahita

but i can continue to pressure until its check mate, shouldn't this allow me to continue?

IMBacon

One more time...

Black has no legal moves, and chess isnt golf.  You cant buy a mulligan to pass on your turn.

The lesson to be learned here is that greed kills.  Win a won game, and dont keep grabbing material.

jdcannon

Can you give me a link to the game?

jdcannon

The 2 mover was agreed draw, and the one before that was stalemate.

Galaxy_Chess_God

these are the only ways to draw a game

Both players agree on a draw

3 fold reputition

timeout vs insufficient material

stalemate

Well actually you forgot the 50 move rule

Galaxy_Chess_God

but i'v played games that lasted up to 60 moves

RonaldJosephCote

You have to declare a draw at move 50......if you don't, it can continue.

Galaxy_Chess_God

oh

maybe I'll do that when I'm losing on move 60 next time

RonaldJosephCote

  You mean move 49.

micahbm

The 50 move rule is that a game including 50 consecutive moves without a capture or a pawn move is a draw.

It is 50 moves with no captures or pawn moves, then a draw can be claimed. If either of those happen, the count resets.

If that count gets to 75 it is automatic in OTB; not 100% sure that has been implemented here but might be.

Galaxy_Chess_God

no I've been to 90 moves cause I sucked at rook+king mates

It is not moves total, but moves after the last capture or pawn move. For that to have been the case, 90 moves, all pieces would have needed to be traded off by 15 to hit 75 moves under those conditions.
