Wrong amount of players advance in tournament?

Can anyone explain to me why I will not advance to the next round in this tournament? It sais top 3 advance and I took a draw in an unclear position to secure third place, but now it looks like only the top 2 players advance.

Stickman13

As far as I know, that is because your group only has 5 players, rather than 6. Half or less have to go through so in this situation only 2 players advance.

MSC157

Ouch! But what about when it's head to head and both advance?

Polar_Bear

Since in round_1 also 3 of 5 were advancing, ask TD to contact staff and fix it.

[edit] You must contact staff directly since TD is no longer active. Fill a ticket.

I read the FAQ and both should advance in ties. It sais nothing about that fewer players can advance in some cases, although I remember when setting up tournaments that you can chose a maximum of half the max group size to advance. In a previous round 3 players advanced in a group of 5 players though, so that kind of ruins that theory.

I'll contact staff

I don't know how tournaments work, so just wondering, couldn't HKSchaak also claim he should advance?  You both tied for 3rd.  Maybe that's why neither of you advanced?

Polar_Bear

And if they will not help you, you are eliminated wrongfully and you may regard yourself as moral winner of the whole tournament. Wink

MSC157

Yes, everyone should advance. Technically speaking, if all games were always drawn, then it could be a neverending tourney.

Cinnamonster

You and 4th place are tied in score and tiebreak.

I got the response from staff that he would forward it to the technical team and that he couldn't manually edit who goes through and who is eliminated from the tournament as the tournaments are completely automated at this time. The final round has now started without me. It's too bad since I did pretty well in the tournament. I managed to draw against 2 players rated about 2300 and I have a positive score against 2 players in the final round.

I'll just consider myself a moral winner I guess Smile

Tournaments here are set that the number of players advancing each round cannot be more than half of the largest group size that round (except if there are ties). Since there are only five players in each group in Round 3, then the number of players advancing is set to 2 instead of the 3 in the original tournament settings.

In Round 1, since there were other groups of 6, 3 players each were able to advance from the 2 groups of 5.

That doesn't help you now, you've already been surprise eliminated, but hopefully that makes sense for future tournaments!

That rule does make sense to me, but it doesn't make sense to me to use rules not mentioned in the FAQ or to not have any indication of having less players advancing for those specific rounds. As things are now, you have to know a hidden rule and you have to look at all the pairings to know if it applies. It's very unintuitive.

I too think that it would be helpful if on one of the tournament screens it showed how many players would advance from the current round. Staff commented that they would " let our team know about the issue" and report any updates in another thread on this topic and other tournament formatting issues that I posted in, but that was 10 months ago. Perhaps we'll see something with the new version this summer.

Martin0

Any link to that thread?

Menamow

Sure, the thread also references issues with the number of players in a group and issues with final rounds.

Your trophy, Sir

howlongjoe

Hi I belong to a chess club who conducts tournaments all year round. Our last tournament was the championship tournament.

Everyone was asked before the championship started to nominate if they were playing.

The games started at the skeduled date and the first round started. One of our player's played his first game which he lost then quit the tournament and has not been back since.

Another player quit before the tournament started.

The argument has been that since the first player quit the tournament after losing his first game, that the winner of that game has the advantage over all the other player's in points , and that the rest of the player's should of been awarded the forfeit for not having the chance to play the person who quit the tournament.

So how fair is it to the rest of the tournament player's who did not have the chance to play the quitter?

Can we have a ruleing on this matter so as to put members minds at rest?

It is argued that when the player quit the tournemt that for the rest of the tournament he, the quitter's games were annulled. Is this right.?

We are looking to get this matter solved if you can help me please.

AussieMatey

Either everyone gets a forfeit from the quitter, or the rule could well be that the quitter's first game is annulled and he is not included in the standings at all.

Thank you Aussie Rookie for that information. I will pass that information onto our club president.
