It is perhaps easiest if you follow your friend. In Live chess, click on his/her name and select "Follow". Or, you can type "/follow your-friend's-handle" in the chat window.

You can watch a friend when they are in a game by going to your "friends" tab then clicking "watch" next to the name of the friend that you want to watch.
