Live games on the app?

I was wondering if it's possible to play live games against friends or specific people on the Chess.com app? Whenever I try to challenge somebody specific it says they are not available for live chess.

You can but they have to be in Live at the same time, allow incoming challenges and have your rating in their allowed rating range.

what do you mean by in live?

I don't know which app you are on but when you first launch the app you get an icon that shows you are logged into the Live server, on Android.

In order to challenge someone, to a Live game, they either have to also be logged in to the Live server, either on the app or website. On the latter, you have to manually do it.

I use the ios and I have never seen a live icon. Could you send a screenshot?

When I hit Play and the + to create a challenge the following icon shows.

The dialog says:

Live Chess Connection

Will automatically turn off after 30 seconds idle

So I was a little wrong and it only comes up after that, though I think it used to come up during first launch.
