Whatever people write and think about it, it is a sacrifice for the single reason that there is no other adopted term to describe giving up material in order to achieve checkmate (or some other worthwhile goal like promoting a pawn or getting a strong attack). Until there is, one may distinguish many different levels and orders of sacrifice but they will all go under the same name. Language is about "spanning a conceptual space". You cannot just take out a meaningful concept and leave a local language vacuum.

That moment came a long time ago when Rudolf Spielmann wrote 'The art of sacrifice' before WW2. See some of the posts in the thread for which I've provided a link for discussion of this idea.
I had read some of the posts - not all but I will. Note that the term "combination" cannot replace "sacrifice" as the sacrifice is a phase in a combination and is required to define it. But actually, combinations do not really need sacrifices though they are usually part of it. I'll say more when I read the whole thread.
Yes, I agree with both points you make if we accept the more inclusive definition of what a sacrifice is. The second one about combinations not necessarily involving sacrifices is made in the thread, but your useful point about the sacrifice being specifically a phase in a combination needed to be made much clearer there and is a very good point. Look forward to reading your contributions to the discussion (if you do indeed decide to say more).
