Interesting joke problem v.9: Mate in 17 in a battle between two overpowered armies

Shakki-Mikko

My series continues again! I just can't stop making grin.png I think that this is maybe the best in the series.

This time both players have pretty equal overpowered armies (white: 136 vs. black: 147 points), but just a little less material having white have an advantage. Winning isn't still too easy and this is maybe the most difficult in the series. If you don't find out the brilliant winning idea, just click the Solution-button and enjoy the show or use the Hint-button when needed which is my recommendation wink.png ATTENTION: this is not mate in 17, it's mate in 18.

What do you think, is this the best in the series?: (Click here to v. 1)(Click here to v.2)(Click here to v.3)(Click here to v.4)(Click here to v.5)(Click here to v.6), (Click here to v.7)(Click here to v.8)

Good stuff! I like how in the second stage of the solution, W has many options for releasing stalemate but only Rxd2! works. There seems to be a flaw though - White can skip 10.Bd7 but play 10.Rxd2! immediately, then 10...Rxd2 11.Bd7/Qd7 Bxd7 12.Qxd7/Bxd7 Rxb2 13.Rxb2 transposes to the intention but the line is one move shorter. Hope you can fix this.

Thank you for the response! You are right, 10. Bd7 was useless. I also think that a little better move for Black maybe 5. Bxc8 because it may lead one move more. Also I think that releasing the stalemate Bxd2 may work too. But maybe I just transform that bishop to rook so that nullifies that possibility. Conclusion it may still be mate in 17 which would be nice because you can't edit the title. However remaking position and all moves isn't so easy but maybe I do it once I am home from my trip.

I made some important updates to that puzzle, and it made it a little bit more complicated so unfortunately it's not mate in 17 anymore but it's mate in 18. However, the puzzle is still almost all the same. I wish I could edit the tittle...

In the new version, it seems that W can swap move 10 and 11: 10.Bh8 Bd7 (not 10...Bxb7? 11.Ne8) 11.Qbc8.

Thanks, that's right. But continuum is still the same. I'll add that as a comment.
