Tactics Flying

  • #1

I know it was a casual blitz game online where I executed a simple tactic, though I just have to post this.

    null

Huh... I can't see the board for some reason. Can anyone else?

For some reason, I can't share a board for people to see, so I added a snapshot of the position. White to play. happy.png

Hint please? I want to do something with the Q, LsB and R on g1 but can't think of anything effective

You are absolutely right! All three of those pieces play a factor in this fatal attack! Also, note the weakened Kingside, and shred him to pieces! You may have to do some calculation...

Still nothing that works...I'll keep trying!

Maybe some other user will jump into the conversation and help! happy.png

    Yup

You know, there is a puzzle format, right?

    1.Rxg7, threatening Qxh6#. If Kxg7, 2.Qg5+ Kh8 3.Qxh6+ Kg8 4.Qh7#. I think Black has to give up his Queen to prevent this.

That's the point of post #2... I tried that, but it didn't work for some reason

Rook sacrifice on g7 and later Qg5 i guess. Any reply seems pretty useless at this point. Your opponent cannot even make some forcing moves to defend himself.

happy.png Sorry had to go to bed. Now I'm back still with no answer but you're right! Seeing @toucanchess' solution, I see that it was a bit more calculation than I can manage for now (should have set up the board instead of insisting on doing it in my head!) Good practice though, and puzzles are always fun! Keep them coming

After Rg7, if Kxg7 then its mate in 3. The best reply for black here seems to be Qxb3 check and later Qxd1 losing his queen.
