Language is about sharing experience. What's fascinating is the idea we could talk of an experience to someone who's never knew the same. Wouldn't the words be meaningless?

Sometimes when I'm talking philosophy I think how can I ever relate to someone that's never experienced anything like what I have?

I'm stunned to find others have experienced what I have too.

Things like the absence of self. That I am entirely love. A force of magnificent proportions. True innocence. Joy. Bliss.

Yes and no. If you'd never seen a banana you'd struggle to make sense of my describing it. I could say it's yellow. What if you'd never seen yellow?

Well crystal don't worry about getting deep here. This is a self expression thread. There are no limits Mod willing.
Avatar of Tomlight
Sure. But without that the words would be meaningless. Can you see?

So sometimes I think people can talk philosophy infinitely but without sharing the same experience hope of shared understanding is futile.

My experience is that truth comes from within. From without you can obtain a belief.

So and so told me. Within is where we know.
Avatar of Tomlight
We see the truth within. Then from without we grow to understand that experience. That's the journey.

The incredible thing though about somewhere like this is we can talk of our experiences and someone can say hey this happened to me.

You can understand how they are feeling and they make sense of how they feel and how you feel too. You think wow. Thank you. You're beautiful!
Avatar of Tomlight
Yes. That's what I'm saying.

I think the other thing is that talking like this you can lay all your ideas out like jigsaw pieces.

Fit them together. I think that's how the talking therapies help really.

People help themselves with someone that's willing to let them arrange their own thoughts.

I don't correct Carolina because whatever words she uses I think yeah I get that. I understand.

Except when she makes language up. That made me laugh! It's true though.

We can though invent terms I guess so long as we translate their meanings.

The '1960', 'Spartacus' movie, 'battle scene'.. {unfortunately, reduced by 3 minutes, over what it once was, on 'YouTube'}. - It still conveys, Most of the excitement, {thanks, to the chosen 'background' music ..plus, the circa, 8,000 hired 'extras'.. otherwise, actual, Spanish, soldiers.. back then}.. Who made their way out, to the chosen, Real - life, 'Spanish' 'plain' & 'valley'. o:

Anyway what I'm saying is I could say the self is an illusion but if you've never experienced that you can only believe it or disbelieve it. You can't know it. The truth comes from within.

Nice Ed.

I don't see why we need to read texts or listen to others to know what's true. That's not my experience.

Buddhism is founded upon the inner journey. Why do we need to worship another to take that journey? Use chants? We don't. We just need to make the same journey. Just notice.

Stop talking and start listening.

I find that understanding an experience you've had takes years. As does noticing what's real.

My mum just gave up. Spent decades trying to make sense of what she'd experienced and knew to be true. Realised no one was going to explain it to her.

She experienced that it's all one. Death is an illusion and everything is alright. She felt she absolutely knew all this for a passing moment. Knew it. After tried to make sense. Gain an understanding.
