Most people are aware of how important being secure online is, but a recent report shows that not everyone perceives that threat equally.

Norton by Symantec recently released its Cybersecurity Insights Report which delves into statistics of online crime in Canada, its perception among different age groups and the financial toll it can take on consumers. One of the most alarming statistics from that report is 28 per cent of Millennials surveyed believe they aren't interesting enough to be a target of cyber crime. If you fall into this category, and think you're immune to things like credit card fraud, unauthorized access to your email and more, you're in for a bit of a rude awakening.

As a Millennial myself, I'm guilty of having this frame of mind regarding cyber security. I don't share my account information, add locks to my devices and routinely change my passwords. What could possibly go wrong? Jamie Manuel, Information Protection Manager at Symantec, shares with us why that attitude needs to change.

We can thank Walt Disney and his cabal of adorable cartoon characters for instilling in us one of the primary tenents by which many of us continue to live today. Call it the Thumperian Principle: If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
You remember how it goes.

But according to a new workplace study out of the University of British Columbia's Sauder School of Business, the advice from the Disney briar patch may be causing more harm than good. Turns out, being ignored at work is worse for our physical and mental well-being than verbal abuse, intimidation, humiliation and even sabotage.

People who say they have experienced ostracism in the office are significantly more likely to report a degraded sense of workplace belonging and commitment, a stronger intention to quit their job, and a larger proportion of health problems, the study found. At the same time, managers and staff at the 90 Canadian companies surveyed told researchers that they felt ostracizing behaviour was more acceptable – even professional -- than other forms of bullying.

The results make more sense than might first appear, said Sauder professor Sandra Robinson, an expert in workplace psychology and co-author of the bullying study. “We've been taught that ignoring someone is socially preferable (to other bullying behaviours),” she told Yahoo Canada Finance. “But we are social animals. We are hard wired to be connected to people, so ostracism feels more threatening than negative threatening. It's like a social death.”

Mise en ligne le 11 mars 2010

This is from the documentary. Check out the guitar parts Daniel Lanois finds from the song, and if you're patient you'll see Bono grimace at hearing himself singing. It transitions into With or Without You, a video I uploaded a while back. It's got other stuff too.

Although it sounded good he had a wrong singing style in the 80s, which nearly ruined his voice after the "Joshua Tree" period. He had a lot of voice problems on the tours around that time. I guess he took singing lessons for a better technique since - but by using that he lost a bit of what made him sound so special in the 80s.
Interesting - I never thought about his singing style...
One of my mates always used to say that he likes a lot of U2's songs but he can't stand Bono's voice because he always sounds like he is starting to cry anytime soon :)

Can Women Sing in Falsetto?

 By Will Oremus

Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, a trio of brothers famous for their high-pitched singing on hits such as “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever,” died Sunday at age 62. As falsetto singers, they’re part of a male musical tradition that includes Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, Curtis Mayfield, and Prince. Why don't women ever sing in a falsetto?

Because they don’t have to. The term falsetto has multiple definitions, but it most commonly refers to a vocal technique that allows men to reach the high registers that women can hit naturally. In anatomical terms, a falsetto voice results from the stretching of the vocal cords so thin that the mucous membranes remain mostly parted, instead of opening and closing fully as they do in one’s natural singing voice. This results in a higher-pitched sound than would otherwise be attainable, though it comes with a loss of power and control.

According to this description, both men and women can use "falsetto" voices for speaking or singing. A falsetto can be difficult to distinguish audibly from a woman's natural vocal range, however. That’s because their thinner, more flexible vocal cords give them greater, natural control over their voices as they rise into the highest registers. So while untrained male voices “break” into falsetto as they rise, women’s voices slide into it.

Whether the term can apply to women at all has long been debated. Some 19th-century musical theorists described the natural upper register of the female singing voice as a falsetto, while others used the same term to mean a breathy middle register. These days it is usually used in a derogatory sense, as when a female mezzo-soprano tries to hit notes in the soprano register and ends up sounding weak and breathy. Scientists have confirmed that a woman's vocal cords remain mostly open when she sings in this way, as happens with male falsettists.

Some female vocalists  can reach a register above their natural range, but with a pure, piercing quality unlike that of the traditional falsetto. This technique, famously employed at times by Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera, is more commonly described as a “whistle tone.” Scientists have not been able to determine just what’s going on in the larynx.
