i must start by saying i'm a big fan of elton (reginald) and bernie taupin. i have owned every album. 

this post about him playing crap makes me ask, what? is there something about elton in his early years where the movie is worth watching to learn?

ron, i'd also recommend you never write or say "very gay". there is gay. that's it! for example, would you characterize me as very straight? 

ok, that's kind of a trick question because you might think i'm a very big jerk, or, very big a**hole. 

even if you did, those terms are based on personality, not orientation.

on the concert pianist thing, i read that billy joel thought he was marginalized because he went to juilliard, and was jealous of elton's success. it made me dislike billy joel.

he went to the premier school for the arts and he's bi*ching about another having more success than you. 

gee, maybe your songwriting wasn't as good. 

the irony of this is that joel was good. just not as good as elton, and when they toured together, billy's ego couldn't handle it.

Saw Elton John live at the Birmingham NEC  some 20 years ago . 

Two things I recall, the performance was brilliant ............and taking a good hour to leave the car parking area!

    Sorry Al.....the thing about "playing crap" is, to me most of what's on the radio....pop music is crap. I'm a jazz purists..... yes, yes I know, there is some rock music that's good....Allman Brothers etc.    Your other point about gay.....  When Elton was coming up, I had no idea he was gay. The movie shows guys kissing..... sorry, its just not my cup of tea.  Mind you, those people should not be vilified for their beliefs but....

first, don't think you ever need to apologize to me. 

i agree many pop songs are junk, but i wouldn't put elton john in that category. as far as musical tastes are concerned, to each their own. it is 100% subjective.

ron, are you aware that the majority of pop songs are written by just a few people? 

you might have to find someone from louisiana to properly describe it. (i read that's where jazz was 'born')

What about Delta Blues? Jumpin' Jive, Zydeco and Dixieland?

Always worth wandering into Alan Lomax territory , some wonderful stuff there.
