I don't blame you for being skeptical, but it really is just a place to play backgammon online for free. You can join the community via Discord, Matrix or IRC and see it's been around for a few months and is gaining a following. Nothing fishy going on, and if there is anything specific I can clarify let me know.
https://bgammon.org is a free and open source online backgammon server. I launched it a few months ago and have been implementing feedback from the community ever since. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
