Life is backwards

Simply put, by the time we are wise enough to realize what is really important in life we are too old to do anything about it.  Whether it's how to choose a career or a mate, whether or not to have kids, or any of the things that effect our lives in profound and lasting ways.

School years are a prime example of wasted opportunity for all but a very few people.  For twelve years or more we drift through it thinking some wonderful life will somehow appear and save us from the boredom.  It might.  Chances are though, that it will take even more than twelve years to realize what you might have done differently to fix the mess you are in.

This includes but is not limited to family life, finance, a boring job, health and personal relationships.

I suggest to young people to not view life as something that just happens and you have no control over it.  Don't waste your youth thinking that important decisions don't need to be made until later.  Truthfully, the decisions you make as a teenager affect your future in ways you can't imagine.

School will not prepare you for life at all.  Even college, if all you do is mope though some meaningless extension of the same garbage you learned in high school, will not help.  It will just waste another four years of your youth.  If you have no idea why you're going to college don't go.  Go to a trade school.  If you think getting married is the thing to do don't do it.  If you're really into someone because of what they look like remember those looks won't last long.  If your favorite thing to do is a video game remember that few jobs require those skills.

Forget what your friends are doing.  They'll be gone soon and there will still be you.  Life is long and complicated and very expensive in more ways than just financial.  Be smart.  Find someone you admire and figure out why.  Then do what you need to to get there.  Now not later.

This helped in more ways than you can know. Thank you.

Solid advice.

I could add that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it but that's another topic.

Never said that.  What do you disagree with?

I disagree with the 11th word on the 12th line - it starts with an 'a'. happy.png

Yep, life is full of lessons. All you have to do is pay attention. Sometimes that's tough to do as your life is unfolding. A tough lesson for me to learn is that you can love someone deeply but not be able to live with them. It turns out compatibility really is more important than attraction.

A person's integrity is the only thing of any real value they have control over. Fate can take health and material possessions in a heartbeat but it can't take who you are as a person. Your values and personality will be the most important things you ever work on. Try to do yourself right.

Life is not perfect and can be disappointing at times. Learn from mistakes and try not to let things like anxiety and guilt keep you down. Get help when you need it (

No shame in asking for help). Enjoy good things and appreciate fulfillment over happiness. Even during mundane times you can find moments of joy.

Disagree with:

  • School doesn't prepare you for life at all

It does partly. Too much burden to put on a 1 solution to fit all system.  Also alternatives might be worse.

  •  find someone you admire

Most kids would pick some reality show star

Attention is important to gather data around us but how each individual processes it into information can be scary.  The alternative unfortunately is to follow the crowd.

Integrity. Unsure how one defines this. Seen too many people of self proclaimed integrity making everyone around them miserable and ending up miserable.

But yes, do yourself right. You need to wake up with yourself.
