Dental research is aimed at finding materials that are best suited for repairing missing, damaged or even decayed teeth. Materials such as ceramics and polymer compounds are increasingly being used in dentistry because they look like natural teeth.
Dental fillings are materials that “fill” spaces that have been created by decayed tooth. The dentists remove the decay and fill to restore the tooth. Dental fillings are used to fill or repair minor tooth defects, tooth decay or even damaged surfaces. Filling or bonding is fairly simple. It requires only one or two visits to the dentist- the dentist removes decayed area, cleans it up and fills it with chosen filling.
Filling material is of various types. Fillings are of various types: amalgam fillings and composite resin fillings and ceramic fillings.
Composite resin fillings are best for front teeth because they match natural-teeth color. Composite fillings are versatile and can be used for repair of chipped, broken or worn teeth. They are expensive as and don’t last very long.
Resin filling is a type of composite filling. It is made from glass filler and this is used for very small, non-load bearing fillings between the teeth.
Amalgam fillings are the least expensive and are usually used for the back teeth because of aesthetics.
