Total solar eclipse! In the U.S. watch for it Monday.

Is anyone (in the U.S.) planning on viewing the eclipse on Monday? I hope you heard of it - if you're in the path this will be a total eclipse - the moon completely blocking the sun.

In 2012, I got this picture of a transit by Venus. The little black dot is Venus moving in front of the sun.

The eclipse I think will be way more cool!

The path of this eclipse will take it near many cities and will probably be seen by more people than any other eclipse in history. Check the internet for pics - I'm sure in some of them Neil Armstrong's footprints will be visible.

It's three days away. If you can see it, but don't bother to go outside and check it, it will be a long time before there is another one! (a previous eclipse):

Leaving now. All hotels near the path were full, so I will camp in a tent for two days. May be no internet access, so it will be a few days before I post here again.

Only partial here, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but the weather prediction is good, and I will be taking frequent breaks from work to wander outside!

One day away!  Writing now from campground lodge. Many people are here to view the eclipse, and we hope skies remain sunny. Some people are making pin-hole cameras out of cardboard, and other unusual devices to view the eclipse. There is a shortage of eclipse glasses, but I believe the total eclipse from start (partial), to totality, and then to end (partial) should last almost two hours, so I'm sure everyone will share glasses.

I bet South Carolina was awesome - a lot of the people at the campsite this morning (Waynesveille, NC) went to South Carolina to see the eclipse. I went westward to the little city Cullowhee still in North Carolina.

I took more than 150 photos. The first is "totality" where only the sun's corona is visible. In the second image the sun is just starting to emerge again from behind the moon.

I don't know what caused the slight "rainbow" in the 2nd image. It might either be a true atmospheric phenomenon, but it may also have been caused by the optics in the camera lens.

If there are any astronomers or photographers who know what may have caused it please let me know. Still travelling with limited internet access. Will check back later.
