Hello everyone, and welcome to one of the most thrilling hours of my life! This is the 2025 Chess.com Community Spell Chess Championship, an unbelievable variant filled with chaos, crazy attacks, and spells that change the very basix of the game. There were eight qualifiers running throughout the day (2025/08/14) and I played many of them.
Spell Chess is one of the most exciting variants on Chess.com. The game is played normally, except you have five freezes (that you can use to freeze pieces in a 3x3 grid for one move), and two jumps (that you can use to jump over another piece like it isn't there). This makes for some crazy games, and out-of-this-world tactics.
The format for these qualifiers was a 75 minute arena of 3+2 spell chess. After the arena clock ticked out and all the games were finished, the first place finisher would go on to the Finals tomorrow (2025/08/15). Only first place matters, and this competition drew many specialists from all around the world, eager to show off their skills with freezes and jumps. The players in the final will be playing for cash prizes, with 1st place getting $750!
However, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th qualifiers simply didn't go well for me. I lost over 80 rating points in the arenas, and never got close to the #1 spot needed for qualification. After a few hours of frustration, I left the computer screen for my football practice.
My plan was to play the 8th qualifier as soon as I got back from football, however disaster struck and I got back home five minutes late. The final arena - my last chance for qualification - had been going on for 5 minutes and players already had a 25 point lead on me!
But I stuck to it, fighting hard, amassing huge streaks and gaining points faster than bullet chess being played on a bullet train. After an hour had gone by, the dust cleared and there were two people in contention for the first place position and the glory that came with it. I was one of them, and the other was IM @DragonB70, the runner-up of last year's championship and a pioneer in the spell chess world. I was praying harder than I'd ever prayed in my life! But I was also calm. And I didn't pray for a win. I prayed that God's will be done, "on earth as it is in heaven".
With time ticking down, both of us racked up wins like popcorn. Dragon was up by three points, then I took over by one, then Dragon won two more and it looked like it was over. But then with a minute to spare, I won in five moves and started a game that won me the tournament! After all the games concluded, I was the winner by one singular point!!!!
