No problem, I can't stand it whenever people insult others for no reason. I'm glad I could help 👍

what is nothing? this is an old old philosophical discussion; nothing is a concept in your head; there is no nothing that exists as something outside your head; like the number zero; a mere placeholder idea; useful in mathematics and other types of reasoning; nothing more, nothing less

First of all, thank you for being one of the few people who answered my forum question! So if nothing is zero, what can be nothing be classified as?

Btw, I sent you a friend request also :)

I'm sorry, I have too many friends, and I don't want anymore. Nothing personal.

like I said it can be classified as an idea; a concept; specifically a mathematical and possibly a philosophical concept. like the concept of infinity; it is not a "thing" or object; if I say "there is no air in a vacuum" I am not saying there is something in the vacuum; there is NOTHING in the vacuum; the nothing does not exist; except in our minds as the idea of the absence of anything in the vacuum

I’m just thinking what happened before Big Bang (Big Bang made space)? That’s a real question

Ooh! That's another interesting question to think about. If you don't mind answering my question, what do you think nothing is after reading the previous posts?

so what you're saying is that nothing is a description of things? I'm just trying to clarify your thoughts since others have also said similar things.

The universe is expanding?Must be expanding into the nothing, right?LOL

The old Leibniz question, "Why does something exist rather than nothing?" Nothing is the absence of anything. I would say the number zero is not nothing but is something. Can we imagine a "possible world"/that is a state of reality where there is literally nothing? Yes. Is that our reality? No. So how do we explain the existence of something? Can something come from literally nothing? No, because nothing isn't something/anything, but the absolute absence of anything. So for the heck of it let's talk about something. Anything that exists must have an explanation for its existence. I can only think of two possibilities put forth by philosophers. Anything that exists, exists (1) due to the necessity of its own nature or (2) due to some cause.

I would add that negative numbers are something (the set of real numbers less than 0). And -1 x -1 (or any negative number) is a positive because that is a forced logical consequence of the distributive law and multiplication by zero law: a(b+c) = ab + ac. a x 0 = 0. So for example, -2 x 0 = 0. Now let's substitute: -2 x (3 + (-3)) = 0. Now let's distribute: -2(3) + -2(-3) = 0. Gives: -6 + -2(-3) = 0. The only way to get 0 is if -2 x - 3 = 6, giving -6 + 6 = 0....OK, that probably put people to sleep, but the point is negative numbers are not nothing but something so we can't say by analogy that nothing x nothing = something. The absence of anything (nothing) x the absence of anything (nothing) = the absence of anything (nothing)

To be more precise you can't really multiply nothing by nothing because it's not something, it's nothing.
