CHESS ETIQUETTE: Playing On In Ridiculous Positions, etc,

Uh, no. It's people that deserve respect, not dumb pieces. This thread is about showing respect to opponents in OTB tourneys, people who have given up money & time to travel to a venue to play in a chess tourney with you. So, if your OTB game is DEAD LOST or DEAD DRAWN, and there is no chance of a swindle, THEN RESIGN or agree to a draw, so both of you can have a break between rounds.

The worst offenders are kids who have been ordered by their coaches never to resign or agree to a draw. I once had a clueless kid play deep into a DEAD DRAWN endgame, dragging us both to a 50-move-rule draw. After the game, when I asked him what the point of his pointless play was, he said "I was trying to flag you."  Ridiculous. I had 5-10 minutes left, and it was a 10 sec. increment game.

Anyway, the pandemic means it will be a long time yet before we see OTB play again.

So why not show the people respect and put your skills to use and get that mate/speed up that draw....rather than wanting them to lay down their king.

I am a new player and I love to learn from others. I usually play people better than me, if not much better than me. I do not want to be rude though, so there have been times where I wave the white flag LOL. Other times I keep it going and see what my opponent does. Two people that I play regularly to learn the game are my husband and son. I will ask them what they would do if they were me. They know I am learning and sometimes they say give up and sometimes they say "Let's play this out."
