Unsolicited computer analysis of an ongoing VC game

varelse1

So I am in a Votechess game.

A teammate of mine suggests a pawn sac, leading to what appears to be a winning attack. And he posts a board to support his analysis.

So I click the "analysis" icon in the lower left hand corner of the board, to try out one defense for white, he did not look at.

Up pops a an evaluation bar on the left side of the board. The engine tells me black is ahead over 500 centi-pawns. (Even though black is behind one pawn on the board, right now.)

So now I know the engine agrees with my teammate. The sacrifice is good. The attack is good.

Why is Chess.com providing computer analysis of games, that are not even finished yet? That I didn't even ask for?

This feature should be removed, immediately.

Votechess teams are supposed to using their own analysis. Not some engine's analysis.

Here is an example, from a (now finished) VC game:

Click on the analysis icon in the lower left corner, to see the computer evaluation.

You will see the engine evaluates white to be far ahead, based on the strength of the attack. Even though the material on the board is even.

This little trick seems to work with ongoing games too. Not just finished ones.

InchTowardsDaylight

I noticed that in a forum post (someone posting their finished game) and was very surprised.

I truly dislike engines, so not welcome at all!

OMG, you're right! This is legal cheating and needs to be stopped immediately.

InchTowardsDaylight

Well...I think it's accidental cheating...we won't use it, never have. If trans want to chest, them thry can easily analyse with engines. Normal teams don't.

InchTowardsDaylight

But it shouldn't be automatic.

wow

I left a message for Erik and requested that this feature be removed immediately. I also suggested that all ongoing VC games be declared void.

Liked the first part.

odyson

The second part was a way of underlining the seriousness of the first part. Voiding would be legitimate, but there is no way that chess.com would allow the chaos and complaints that would follow. Nor would they want to advertise this flaw of V3.

lol

How very Machiavellian of you, Odyson.

You can just call him Mac.

Way to go, QA team.

.

Nice to see you varelse1. Hope you're having a good one.

Stuff like this and other related material is why I stopped using chess.com. I laugh when something like this happens.

The computer analysis function of the Analysis board should be off by default.

More importantly, it should be inaccessible for ongoing games.

odyson

On Erik's homepage he asks that site related issues not be addressed to him personally. That seems fair. So, it seems that this issue needs to be referred to Chess.com support. You can read more about this if you go to the notes of the Chess.com V2 club.

Thank you Odyson.

I sent them a gripe.

Will need to wait and see what happens.

If anything.
